Is it okay to paint/spray paint a garden trellis before installing?

I have tried to replace a long-gone rectangular trellis that ran alongside the archway to my front door but there isn't much variety out there. The nearest one is from Argos but it's not dark wood like the previous one was. Presumably it's okay to just buy it and paint it black, or charcoal before putting it up? It won't be harmful or adversely affect any future plant climbers in any way, would it?

Use a proper garden fence paint, there are loads of makes and lovely colours to choose from.

Ooh, I didn't see any of those in Wickes - guess it's like creosoting? Perhaps I should look in that area. Or might it be in a garden centre? Will look into it, thanks for the prompt response!

Creosote will harm plants but I don’t think it’s available any more. Cuprinol is the big brand name but there are likely to be cheaper options. These things are designed to be used in situ, so if you’re doing it before putting it up, so it will be dry before it’s in position,it will make it extra safe
