Young cherry bark missing pic

Newbie gardener here, I noticed my young cherry tree has bark missing. Is it a squirrel, insect or something else? We love this tree and I'd love to protect it but can't seem to find out (via Google) what it is. So does anyone have an idea? It was fine up until now. Its been in for just under 2 years.

@SkunkButtRug That's not looking good - did it flower, and have all the branches got leaves?

It is full of beautiful leaves but no it didn't flower this spring at all.

@DrjonesIpresume I was told it didn't flower because we'd had such a wet winter.
