What plant smells like marijuana (not phlox)

Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help. We moved in a couple of years ago and can smell something like cannabis in the front and back garden.

No cannabis plants. Or phlox. A Mexican orange that we've removed as thought it was that, but the smell is still there.

The closest other neighbour is a farm, so the garden abuts fields and no cannabis growing in the fields.

People joke whenever they come that we're growing weed!

The elderly previous owner was a prolific bird feeder. But I cannot see any hemp for example.

If anyone can shed any light, I'd be very grateful 🙏

Crown imperials smell like weed

Twosticksandstring · 27/05/2024 17:39

Yes, Crown Imperial Fritillaria smells just like - and strongly of - marijuana.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 27/05/2024 17:40

Marigolds absolutely humm like weed

Whatineed · 27/05/2024 18:05

My Basil plants have a bit of a skanky whiff to them. 😂

I'll have to remember to sniff one - because I've absolutely no idea what weed smells like!Grin

No crown imperial fritillary or marigolds. Lots of aquilegia but they don't smell when I sniff them, though the smell is quite wafting. It's really baffling.

@Whatineed I always think this about basil too, glad someone else agrees.

We have several plants of 'society garlic' that are very weed stinky! One postman pointed it out with a knowing smile in his face and he was disappointed to hear it was the driveway plants.

Small bush with long stalks and lovely purple flowers on the end in summer. Look a bit like a long flowering chive.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 27/05/2024 20:50

I think basil smells like urine sometimes, is that just me.

OP it might be an actual skunk who's sprayed your garden.

Magpiecomplex · 27/05/2024 20:54

Some ferns smell quite weed-y. I don't get weed from crown imperials, strangely, I get fox. Is it possible that actually it's a fox doing its business?

PMPBlue · 27/05/2024 20:56

Any currant/ribens bushes? The ones that have tiny pink flowers in spring smell like a delightful mix of cats piss/weed to me <aaahhh>

I’m intrigued too as some of the weeds / natural hedgerows can smell like this! Especially in dense leafy moist areas. I noticed it in Devon on the coast path recently

Indeed
There are places I walk past regularly that smell strongly of weed. Path with hedgerow and field one side, scrubby trees and an A road on the other side. No signs of youths or anyone gathering there, no litter. Another hedge near my road with zero signs that anyone around always smells of weed.
I have looked up plants that may cause this but no correlation

TheGreatPotato · 27/05/2024 21:15

Our walnut tree used to smell like weed.

Trixibella · 27/05/2024 21:17

Could be fox! I think they smell quite similar in passing.

Passing? Pissing!

If a fox has sprayed in an area, it will absolutely smell like weed.

Fizzadora · 27/05/2024 23:16

Choisya can be a bit stinky. I second Flowering Currant(Ribes) although it smells like cat pee to me.
I can't actually help because despite being a child of the sixties, I have absolutely no idea what weed smells like🤣🤣

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 27/05/2024 23:21

I have catnip growing along my front path and people often think they can smell weed if the cat's been in there stirring it up.

Hallandporridgeoats · 28/05/2024 14:09

Thank you everyone, I'll research some of your ideas. We did have a Choisya, and took it out as I was convinced it was that, but the 'aroma' still lingers.

I've seen a fox use the garden before. It could be coming in regularly though I've not seen evidence of that. I'll have a little hunt around!
