Please help a pathetic gardener. Is this a weed?

Obviously meant 'friend or foe'

It’s golden rod. It grows on railway embankments and in any garden which will give it room. But it’s quite pretty when in flower in late summer, just be sure to cut it back after flowering because if you let it seed it will colonise your garden while you are out for the day.

If it’s Golden Rod, then it’s probably Canadian Golden Rod, a garden escape, and not our native Golden Rod which is rather rare.
