How do I spruce up my iron fence and gates?

Not really gardening but here goes anyway.

I've got iron gates and an iron fence which is covered in green stuff ( a bit like dry algae) and in places the black paint is coming off and the railings beneath it are getting rusty.

How do I restore them to their former glory?

I would give them a good rub down to smooth them outm, then repaint

wire brush to remove grot and flakey bits, two coats of hammerite smooth. don't drip it all over the path.

Not sure what type of paint it is. It seems quite heavy duty because the flakes are quite big and thick.

What's hammerite?

hammerite is a type of paint that's good for metal - i think you can paint it direct onto rust though clean off as much as possible obviously. Comes in a blue tin in either smooth finish or hammered finish (honest, it looks funny ripply when it dries). I'd go for smooth.
