Bastard alliums, can you eat them?

Many years ago, when Woolworths still existed, I bought a packet of spring bulbs, the alliums turned out to be invasive bastards that have burrowed down and out of my wall. Digging them out is impossible- thousands of pearly balls- so I pull the leaves off and hope it hurts.
Do you think you could treat it like wild garlic and eat the leaves, I’m thinking pesto?
(I pulled a bin load of leaves before I took the picture)

Gah. I feel your pain op. Been digging the little bastards out for years and they still keep coming.

I don't know the answer. Nuclear strength weedkiller?

Alliums are from the onion family but not sure about eating these ones. They'd probably give you killer indigestion just put of spite.

It’s the way they pretend to be snowdrop or fritillary leaves that I hate and which stops me using weed killers.

They are called three-cornered leeks and they are apparently edible, but I've not tried them myself. Yes, they spread like wildfire 😔

All members of the allium family are edible. If it smells like an onion then you can eat it.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 26/04/2024 20:13

You can make three cornered leek pesto.

Mainly it is a case of dig the buggers out each and every week.

Apparently it’s illegal to plant them in the countryside they’re so invasive. I have them in my garden too. Little fuckers

Okitsme · 26/04/2024 20:15

Thanks for answering. I’m going to give them the option of disappearing or we will start to eat them- I like to be fair. If I never post again don’t eat alliums!

I can’t believe they sold them in Woolworths! That’s cute and horrifying 😂. Like selling Japanese knot weed!

The aconite bulbs were celandines!
