Hi everyone, I’m not very green fingered and recently have purchased a large planter and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for easy maintenance plants / shrubs? I was thinking roses or hydrangeas? Here is a photo of the planter. Anyway I would really appreciate your recommendations as I really have no idea about anything garden wise!

thank you

Where are you going to put it? Sun or shade?

Roses or Hydrangeas would be much easier to care for in the ground to be honest. - Just make your border wider.

You could put lavendar in it if it's going to be in a sunny spot. Make sure there are holes in the bottom, you might want to line it to help it not rot - you can staple old compost bags in and punch holes in it. And fill with a mixture of multi purpose compost, slow release food grains and some John Innes no 3 compost.

Put it in its final place though as you won't be able to move it once it's full.

Will it go directly on the ground or on a hard surface?

If directly on the ground you could consider removing most of the base so the roots can go straight into the ground underneath, then larger shrubs would be feasible.

If on a hard surface I would stick to easier plants to keep with small roots. If it's in the sun herbs would be a good idea, in the shade you could use ferns, hostas, or smaller hydrangeas.
