Ideas needed!

We have a long (well not very long but much longer than it is wide iyswim!) narrow garden that we have done nothing with in the 2 years we've been here-and i hate it!

It has only a couple of climbers in it to disguise the garage and that is about it.
I think it is north facing but the top half neer the house is all paved and the bottom half is grass and does get the sun all day, as one side has very low fence.

I have no idea what to do with it! I want it to look lovely but at the mo it looks very unloved

I don't know what to plant or where as we have no flower beds and i'm not sure if we could have flower beds as the garden is so narrow.

Please help-i'd love to actually want to sit out there this summer

How about making a sort of twisting path doen to the bottom with an open space at the end? You could use a couple of metal arches to grow climbers over on the way. I would do it so you couldn't see the bottom of the garden until you got there. Perhaps keep the paving near the house?

If you have muscular other half and/or can Get a Man In, tood options are:

treat the whole thing as a giant herbaceous border, with path and maybe central bit of paving for patiot table etc, like redwino's idea

Get rid of the long-ness of it by making it sort of look like a figure of 8 - circle/area of paving and circle/area of lawn, with a bed nipping in between the 2
