How do I get rid of pyracantha bushes?

I have three pyracanthas in my garden, they aren't huge apart from a few very tall branches, but they have been there for a good few years so I imagine they are quite well rooted. If I cut them at the base of the plant do you think they will die? I can't dig them out because they are in a gravelled bit and next to a pavement.

Thanks

I once had the opposite problem to you - builders for next door's extension had to cut down my beloved pyracantha, but I said they needn't bother to dig it out

It came back.... eventually

If you can't dig out, you can keep even very old pryas to a very small shape with regular pruning, so if you can live with keeping an eye on the stumps they won't come back (much)

I hate those things...they are vicous! They do, however, look pretty when everything else is dull. I have 4 of them in my garden and this year I really cut them back a lot. I have made sure that all the branches are above toddler head height and they are much more manageable. I am hoping that I will grow to love them, as they are very well established plants. I'll be interested to see what advice you get.
