Ring doorbell in garden - robin and who?

Smudge2201 · 16/02/2024 19:50

So my other half set up a ring camera in the back garden. And we’ve capture all sorts, lots of cats, mice, birds, and today a lovely robin and another bird hovering. Can anyone tell me what the other bird is? Is it another robin? Other something else? I can’t post the video so I’m having to share grainy screenshots.

Have you got a side view of it? How big is it?

I'd highly recommend the Merlin app - it identifies birds by their sound

Smudge2201 · 16/02/2024 20:16

I’ve somehow managed to upload it to YouTube if that helps, the sound is very cute, I think it might be two robins : https://youtube.com/shorts/re6cCvh5Glo?si=rtjp3E4nAJGN6pob

It looks like a Redcap to me.

I'm being a knob. That was what my Granddad called them. Female Blackcap, even.

No baby robins then 😞 I’ve not heard of a blackcap, that’s a new one on me. This garden of our new house is teaching me lots.

The song is the robin. The other looks like a blackbird to me. Too dark for a blackcap. But I’m not an expert

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/02/2024 20:43

I thought blackbird first, but then it looks reddish brown on the head, which is why i thought female Blackcap - definitely looking for (if it hasn't found it already) a nesting site in that tree; it's a great tree for protection, warmth and camouflage and she was at typical nest height.

Don't write off the chance of baby birds yet - it's only the very start of the season and you haven't experienced the Dawn Chorus in full flow, complete with videos yet!

Ah ok, thank you. It looked a bit small to be a blackbird to me and i thought I could see some red on it, but I am no expect either. The robin’s song is one of my absolute favourites.

I'm sure it's two robins.

Genuinely I’ve gone from ‘not liking birds’ to loving them. Have a bird feeder and bath so this is all new and enchanting to me.

Ah, two lovely little Robins. They are my Mum's favourites.

For some reason, my Ring camera never captured many birds in the back garden. I do get a lot of goldfinches and tits etc, but I mustn't have had it positioned very well.

In the front garden, however I get 3 foxes playing bloody chase-me. (Well, two dog foxes fighting over a Vixen) The poor Vixen often looks straight at the ring camera with a 'Help me' kind of look.

Yes, the red worried me, but seemed more pronounced on the neck than the head, and the rest of the Blackcap is paler, like the other warblers.

Looks like a Bull Finch to me

The flying bird in front of the greenhouse, facing towards the tree? Robin.
