Pruning a salix ( willow)

Hello
I have a 2yr old willow that I've planted in the garden. Didn't want to prune it till it was settled and happy.
I can level it off so it's not touching the floor but the main bulk of it is a mish mash of overlapping branches.
Should I attempt to thin these out and take off the overlapping stems?
How severe can i/ should I be?

I'm OK with pruning roses but these grow up, not down.

Similar rules apply as for roses and any other shrub really. First, cut out any dead or diseased branches, then remove any which cross over others and rub together. You could then look at what's left and if there are any weak spindly branches or ones growing in completely the wrong direction, get rid of those as well. Just keep going until what you have left is an attractively-placed network. If it starts to get too overgrown, then you can take out a few of the older branches each year to make room for new ones.

@Yamadori thank you. It is a bit of a criss cross mess.
