Bramble extermination!?!

Any ideas of how to get rid of a garden full of bramble roots, they're crisscrossing the lawn and I have been pulling/digging them up but DH is getting a bit miffed with the mess/ torn up lawn etc.

We cleared a small paddock of brambles and other tough weeds by having large bonfires on it and then mowing/grazing regularly as soon as anything green returned. It worked very well but did take a couple of years.

My sister, after years of failing to dig the roots out properly, laid her brambles out on plastic sheets and nuked them with a weedkiller. It was fairly successful.
