Hello! These mushrooms are taking over some bare soil and I can’t seem to find what they are online, would anyone be able to help?

Does anyone know what kind of mushroom this is?

I must say that this looks like honey fungus and that is not good news for a garden. Have you had any shrubs die or struggle in the last years?

It looks well established to me and impossible to get rid of.

But wonder what others think?

Could be either honey fungus or maybe brown roll rims?

Thanks for replying! We moved here last December and this is the front of our house with cherry laurel hedging along this area. It doesn’t seem to have been affected, it is growing well and has no signs of being affected at the moment.

Cherry laurel is pretty bullet proof.

The problem with honey fungus is that spreads underground via black boot laces!

It does attack certain shrubs (once killed a lilac I had) so you will need to be careful about moving any earth or planting new things. RHS guide should help (already posted I see!)

Thank you! Oh god, there’s a beautiful rhododendron 5-7m away from that area which RHS says can be affected 😩 I’ll have to look into removing it if at all possible! I do wonder whether the mushroom has been there for a few years

No problem! I use the PictureMushroom app for IDing them usually. Hope you can get it sorted!

I think one of the characteristics of honey fungus is the white frill that goes round the stem, about 1-1.5cm beneath the cap. You can see it clearly in the picture that @takemehomecountryroads posted.

Is this frill on your mushrooms?

Could it be sulphur tuft? Looks similar, I think.

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/11/2023 10:39

There are a lot of fungi that look similar! No-one could get to a definitive id on that photo. It could be honey fungus, and perhaps best to assume it is.
