Please has anyone any advice about renovating a Church pond? It is about 4 metres by 4 metres. I was thinking in terms of anyone knowing of any grants that might be available. Thank you

If you can't find outside funding it sounds like a perfect job for those involved with Scouts/Guides/DoE or a community project to encourage those with MH challenges or that are unemployed especially if they use the church for other things like food banks, we have lots of similar 'green gym' projects in our area.

What needs doing to it? is the liner still good? You may be able to get a local independent garden centre to donate one if it's a community project.
If so the time to do work on it is now as most critters will have left for the winter.

As it's emptied save some of the water in a container to put any over wintering creatures you find.

Cut back and separate pond plants that have gotten too big for their pots, you could offer them locally or request some new ones in a swap.

Dig out the sludge, careful not to rip the liner, keep a little sludge to add back in once the project is completed as it'll hold essential microorganisms.

Refill to cover any plants or leave nature to do its job and fill with rain.

Try to find out if there's a local amphibian and reptile group where you are. They're generally at a county level. You might get some advice and/or volunteers that way.

Can you post any photos of the pond?

Thank you Lucanus. That’s really helpful.I’d rather not put a photo up but it’s about 4 metres by 4 metres, filled with concrete walls and paving slabs around it.

If you do find a source of grants, let me know. A community group I’m involved with has a pond that needs dredging, considerably larger than yours!
