To mow or not to mow that is THE question

My lawn has some slight growth and it would look lovely and tidy again with a nice mow but is it too early??

I struggle with my lawn - it lies a bit flat. It's newish turf and struggling. I fed it with Aftercut last year and did see some improvement. Also spiked it with garden fork. Any more suggestions??

I get real lawn envy!!

ooh we mowed ours last sunday, then it promptly snowed on monday

yesterday i scarified (raked all the dead bits and moss out) in prep for a spring feed.

Go for it i say !

I don't have a rake but I could get one - is it an important bit?? One of those thin, angled tined chappies??

oooh, I'm a garden idiot novice and been wondering whether to mow my terrifying large lawn yet. What would cold weather do to it if we mowed etc etc?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 09/03/2008 22:52

i would ! I have just laid some turf so will leave it a bit - oh and my mower is bust but yes if i were you i would

i itch to mow mine in spring

well, probably no chance for a few days now anyway while we wait for the Worst Hurricane Ever to pass.

I think it's a it early still to mow. Give it a good spiking (I don't think you can ever overdo it, and it's good for bad tempers!). If you're certain it's ready to mow, then set the blades fairly high so that you don't take too much off. If the weather doesn't continue warm, then the lawn could get cold if it's too short. Or something like that. I'm sure there's a more knowledgeable way of putting it, but I'm also learning as I go along and that's how I understood it!

A lawn rake looks a bit like a fan. I bought a plastic one last year, and it's much easier to use for leaves than a metal one, but doesn't scarify as well. If you're tall make sure you get a long-handled one - much easier on your back.

If you are in the South it is definitely not too early to mow the lawn.

We mowed ours 2 weeks ago, and several neighbours have been doing theirs.

Just don't do it when it's too wet.

it is not to early to mow if the weather is warm and dry - but don't cut it very short - just take the tips of it.

I have had a lovely day in the sunshine today - before the hail!! I've done the lawns - front and back. Mowed, raked (shiny new rake) and fed with after cut. Also savagely pruned front garden bushy plants. Back's starting to ache. I'm going to pay for it tomorrow - but hopefully I'll soon have the smartest lawn on the Close.
