What shall i plant on my balcony?

I live on the third floor of a block of flats in London with a south facing balcony. It is on a pretty busy road so I need plants that can cope with heat, wind and pollution. I am pretty hopeless on the gardening front so need some help. I would like plants that are pretty hardy and all year round - any advice would be gratefully appreciated

That's quite tricky - I guess you don't want to be changing bedding plant flowers all the time (hauling compost up & down)

Lavender is quite hardy, once cut flowers the silver foliage lasts well into winter. They need replacing every 3-5 years though. You could put bulbs in and leave.

Some herbs actually quite good, thyme works well in pots

Ivy is not exciting but lasts and is very tough

You could have a few things like this and then add the odd bedding plant for a bit of extra colour?
