can you plant daffodills and tulips etc in the lawn, rthen when there gone mow the grass as normal?

i was thinking of putting some around the egdes of the lawn so that in the spring it sort of looks like a boarder, i was thinking i could plant the bulbs in september time, then they will appear the next spring,i don't know if this is correct? when the tulips etc appear, then go, will i just be able to mow the grass as normal?

I think you need to leave the leaves for a while without cutting them after the flowers have died back. To feed the bulbs for next year. Just mow round them for a while.

Leave the leaves until they start to die off. They are photosynthesisng and making vital energy for the bulb to store and make next years flower.

Must say, I have never fussed with them at all and just cut over them the first time I cut the grass. This may of course affect the way they flower from year to year but they look OK to me.

If you are planting in grass, rather than planting in rows I think they would look better planted in drifts.

Some gardeners advise throwing the bulbs on the ground and just planting them where they land.

We had daffs and crocuses in the lawn at our old house. They looked lovely in the spring .

If you want to do tulips just be wary of when they flower. There's quite a range from the species tulips (which tend to be smaller, less flashy but early flowering) to the more cultivated varieties (which tend to be taller and with bigger flowers but might not flower till May). If you want all the flowers out at the same time you might need to choose quite carefully. Plus you can only get away with not mowing the lawn up to a point

yes it will be lovely with daffs and crocus. not tulips because even if you get early flowering ones they will need to be dug up and replanted each year = hassle.

There is no problem in planting them in the lawn. The best are the smaller Jonquil type daffs as they have smaller leaves and will cope better with being mowed.

Just to add to what fishie said I have some tulips i leave in the ground all year round and they seem fine.
