replacing box hedge

Finally having to admit defeat in the battle against box caterpillars. Came back from holiday to find a row of hedging absolutely decimated, and I'm fed up trying to fight back.

I'm looking to replace it all and am thinking if either rosemary or lavender.

The spot gets some full sun, extending to partial shade in the summer when a large apple tree is in leaf.

Soil is clay

Rosemary seems to do well in other spots in the garden, but I also like the idea of lavender

Anyone used either as a compact-ish hedge with success? Any other ideas also welcome. Using it to separate two levels of garden, so looking for ~0.5 - 1m in height.

We use Rosemary as a low hedge. Works very well

@Tiespin oooh, that's encouraging.

@senua thanks for the link, I'll have a look

We lost about 6 box plants this year. One that we cut back started to put out new leaves and they were attacked in no time. Who knew caterpillars were so clever - and quick!

@Iloveanicegarden they're ruthless! And I suspect, highly organised
