How to pronounce Verbascum chaixii?

How do you pronounce Verbascum chaixii? I’ve always assumed emphasis on second syllable of Verbascum, and I’ve never said chaixii out loud. Google says “chake see I” but surely not? It’s named after the Abbé Chaix, a French botanist, and I’m sure he didn’t pronounce his name “Chakes” with a hard ch.

I have always heard Verbascum with the emphasis on the second syllable as you say. As for chaixii... Shakes-ee-eye, maybe? Although considering how we mangle Fuchsia it could be almost anything!

I think Chaix would be pronounced something like 'shay' so shay eye maybe?

But it would be easier to say Shayzeei so might be that.

Yes, but it isn’t French, it’s horticultural Latin formed around a French name. I suspect Shakes-ee-eye is probably closest.
