Borders

This might be a daft question....the back of my house faces south. I have a border either side of my garden - so are those borders east and west facing and I need to plant accordingly?

Also, is it possible to mix up decorative planting and vegetable planting - to have a 'veg patch' at the end of a border for example?

Yes. That's right and yes you can mix planting or have veg at the end of a border but it will do best in full sun so you might want a border in the middle of the garden somewhere for veg.

A house has a south facing garden if the house is situated on the northern end of the garden area.

A border would be east facing if there is a hedge or fence on the western side of the edge. If there is no fence or hedge and nothing blocking any of the edges it isn't anywhere facing.

A house has a south facing aspect if the higher part of the garden is in the north and it slopes towards the south.

So a house can have a south facing garden with a north facing aspect if the house is at the nothern end but the garden is higher at the southern end.

You can mix up whatever you want, it's your garden.

If your garden faces south, ie when you stand with your back to the house looking at your garden, you are looking south, then the border to the left of you faces left and the one to the right faces east.

Yes, you can have a vegetable parch at the end of a flower border, you can even plant vegetables among flowers. The reason people don’t do it is that they plant vegetables for convenience, eg sowing in straight rows, allowing space for picking
