Hi, please can you recommend me roses with very high fragrance?
I love roses and have few David Austin roses listed below. We moved recently and I am looking to plant more roses in my new garden.
It doesn’t have to be DA roses but anything with a scent that can be smelled from inside the living room when doors open in summer.
The DA roses I have are;
Gertrude Jekyll
Golden celebration
Munsted Wood
Desdemona
Strawberry Hill
The Generous Gardner
Claire Austen
Summer Song

Its possible to filter by scent on the David Austin website, if you want a full list of good ones.

Chandos Beauty and Warm Welcome

Margaret Merrill is my favourite for scent.

Thank you so much @IceandIndigo @VenusClapTrap
@WestOfWestminster i am already using the filter at DA website but wanted to check if there are others. I am obsessed with DA roses. I think Lady Emma is my favourite

Lady Emma is gorgeous but can fail to thrive.

I started a long thread on here a while ago on everyone’s best performing roses. A lot of people chose for scent. It might be worth doing a search for that.

I had a Lady Emma rose - heavenly scent! - but I did nearly kill it.
transported said rose and huge containing pot to my mother’s and she planted it revived it in her front garden. It’s now absolutely magnificent and I am so jealous. You can smell it walking up to the house in the evening sun

I love St Ethelburga. Smells lovely.
I've planted a desdemona bare root recently so I'm looking forward to seeing how that smells and looks

blue for you

unusual colour (purple/pink) and the scent is heaven.

BigBundleOfFluff · 03/05/2023 18:51

Definitely lady Emma - but I think it might be discontinued. Mine is a standard and right by my front door. It's got an amazing smell that on a warm day does waft into the house. Beautiful colour as well.

dubyalass · 05/05/2023 07:26

Gentle Hermione. On a warm day the scent would waft to the other side of the garden. Incredible.

David Austin have discontinued Lady Emma. Gabriel Oak smells amazing. I also have an old rose Madame Legras de St Germain that smells really good. Only flowers once, but nice at the back of a border as quite big.

I have a Princess Alexandra of Kent - huge, beautiful pink roses with a delicious scent.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 05/05/2023 09:12

Lady Emma died in my garden. I have about half a dozen roses, all of which are doing well but my lovely Emma standard just suddenly gave up the will to live after about a year.

Princess Alexandra of Kent is very good AND I think has stunning big orange hips over winter. I don't have one in this garden but miss it.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 05/05/2023 09:14

Oh, and the best scent I ever smelled on a rose was Geoff Hamilton. I often think about adding one to the garden but never get round to it.

There was a bed of these at Kew, I have never smelt such a divine scent.

TonTonMacoute · 06/05/2023 14:03

Lady Hillingdon has a beautiful scent, pretty yellow climbing rose.

Furries · 07/05/2023 03:54

Gabriel Oak is a lovely scent. My neighbour had commented in the past of how she catches wafts of it.

I think you should bear in mind that you may not detect the smell after a while. For me, at the start of first blooms, I love the scent when I leave the house - but after a while I become immune to it.

I did have a climber sent to me by mistake. Had nowhere for it to go so gave it to a friend. The scent was amazing, will try to find out what it was called.

lljkk · 07/05/2023 04:29

Yellow roses. It's always the yellow-slightly peach/orange ones with most scent. Red roses usually look good but often have especially little scent. A rose that looks good usually has weak scent, while the richest smelling ones don't last well/look so great. Sorry don't know a single variety name, but I know by looks.

dubyalass · 07/05/2023 22:40

Yes, Lady of Shalott and Buff Beauty are both yellowy orange and have great scents.

Gilmoregirly · 07/05/2023 23:24

Thank you so much for all the lovely rose suggestions. Please keep them coming
