What to plant to screen road/track

I have just had a lovely new fence put up. Really like it (double slatted), however being a bit of a cheapskate I got the 6' panels cut in half to 3' (!) Ideally this should have been nearer to 5'.

There's a beautiful view over the fields, and I can see the sunset,
but a lane/footpath behind and it's fairly well used.

I'm wondering what I can plant to give just a bit more privacy. I don't want anything too bushy as I've only got a narrow garden. I'm not sure a trellis would work...the back of the fence faces south, but also gets prevailing winds. I like the idea of some narrow trees, more bushy on top.
South Coast...

Amalanchier? quite fine and pretty, not a bulky tree. Or maybe a hawthorn? lovely for wildlife.

I also love Ceonothus (?) with the blue flowers but I'm a bit worried about the wind! I'm don't want anything that will grow over 5-6 foot
