Lawn almost entirely made up of weeds

My lawn is absolutely covered in weeds, there's more weeds than grass.

To dig it up would take an amount of time I don't have.

Should I just got weed killer and spray the whole lawn and start from scratch?

Ours is the same. I just accept it! I think all of the weed killers are horrendous for the environment unfortunately.

Serena73 · 18/04/2023 12:02

I just accept it too. You can't really tell that it's weeds when it's been mowed!

AnnaMagnani · 18/04/2023 12:21

Either accept it or get a professional lawn company in to ressed it.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 18/04/2023 12:22

Live with it, embrace it as environmentally great for bees and butterflies <glares at own dandelions>

asndeorno · 18/04/2023 12:33

I would embrace it, but the majority are spikey which means that DS4 can't play out in the garden.

You could treat it a couple of times 6 weeks apart this Spring to a product eg MiracleGro Evergreen 4 in 1 which feeds the grass and kills the moss and weeds. Do it before it rains - you have to keep kids/pets off till it is watered in. You'll need to rake off the moss after a couple of weeks. You can fill any bare patches with grass seed.
Should improve it significantly.

I have Greenthumb come in 5 times a year. It's about £20 a visit and they do all the necessary things to the lawn according to the time of year, putting down weed-killer, adding strenghteners etc etc, all according to what time of year it is.

I started off with a scarification which was £80 then had the standard 5 treatments and it took a year but my god my lawn is beautiful now - just pure plain green and much nicer than either of my neighbours lol.

You could try a weed wand blow torch and aim fire at the prickly ones. Not used one, but the idea is they don't leave chemicals. Then get the lawn reseeded, or whatever it is you want there. I like a lawn to be daisies, dandelions and clover, but mine is stubbornly keeping its grass and moss combo.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/04/2023 13:18

My opinion is that if it's green and tidy, it doesn't matter what it is.

GretaGood · 18/04/2023 13:21

I weedkiller the dandelions or they seed everywhere.
Most weeds are gradually killed off by regular mowing. Grass appears even without seeding ime.

@Chowtime it looks better in your opinion, not in mine or in the opinion of any wildlife.

@GretaGood dandilions are so pretty and the first widely available food for bees. Putting weed killer on them leads to those bees dying. Such a shame just to give an ugly monoculture lawn.

Reugny · 18/04/2023 13:52

@ChristineCricket she could have put in an artificial lawn instead.

Singleandproud · 18/04/2023 14:06

Get a proper wildseed mix and let it grow.

Dandelions only grow in poor soil, the hefty roots break up the earth improving drainage and aeration , the vegetation degrades in the autumn adding minerals to the soil, the process lasts about 4 years and then when the soil is good quality something else will grow.

Obviously a wildflower meadow isn't any good if you want to kick a ball around. I just mow a path to my seating area and by June I am surrounded by meter tall Oxeye daisies, poppies and a Hugh range of pollinators.

Once it's established you mow at the beginning of Spring and then at the start of Autumn.

Huge* not Hugh

Raindancer411 · 18/04/2023 14:08

I have just got a weeding tool and take out a few I see as and when. Seems so far to get the root too...

True - it just depends on what you want I guess.

Cuppa2sugars · 18/04/2023 19:06

Just hand weed the prickly weeds out.

my lawns are full of moss, daisies and calendine but I don’t care 😁
