Vigorous rambler for brick wall with crappy soil - advice for clueless novice!

I'd like to cover a west-facing brick wall (approx 6ft x 30ft) with a fast-growing rose. The soil is awful, full of stones, very dry and chalky, nothing seems to grow happily there except weeds! Any recommendations for something hardy and un-killable?

That doesn't sound good for roses, TBH. Can you not dig it out to a good depth instead, and refill with decent soil?

Try some Chinese Virginia creeper instead. You need something a bit tougher

A rose would be deeply unhappy there. Maybe try a potato vine instead?
