Suppose it depends on where you live. We used to live on the side of a very cold and windy hill so everything was planted about 2 weeks later than the books recommend.

I think the reason for early sowing isn't that they need a long season (they don't) or that they refuse to fruit after mid June (not true), but that, because they are hardier that French and runners, they can be sown early, and thus terminate the springtime "Hungry Gap" between when all the winter crops have been eaten and the first new season crops are ready.

You can sow broad beans all year round.
