Can lettuce and mustard seeds be planted in the ground now?

Or is it better to sow indoors and plant out later?

Planted straight out last year but can’t remember when.

I never direct sow because of birds,mice, slugs,(and neighbours cats) quarter trays, north facing kitchen window sill,then into the green house.

Lettuce, as above, I never put straight in the ground.
But I do direct sow outside into troughs.
Mustard seed, I would have thought is better on the windowsill.
