Can anybody recommend a good book or site that can teach you how to build a wildlife pond?

We dug one during lock down with just what I read online. Ordered wildlife pond plant bundle from Wetland Nursery online, you need aquatic soil which is cheaper bought locally as shipping is often £££. Frogs arrived within a week of the water going in and way before the plants even arrived.

Key features

  1. Sloping sides for animals to get in and out
  2. No fish
  3. Shallow is best with rocks to hide under. Drying out in summer is fine as some creatures rely on the mud for reproduction stages. The deepest part of my pond is 1m but most of the life is at the rim which has Scottish cobbles on it.
  4. Semi shade is good as it reduces algal growth but not under somewhere you'll be fishing leaves from in the Autumn or Blossom in the spring.
  5. Buy some raised planters to get rid of the displaced soil whilst you are digging.

Did you use a formed liner or plastic sheet? We had to remove our pond which was established by previous owners and about 3m x 2m for building work and want to replace it.
