Mix bulbs up or plant in colour blocks?

Would you plant your tulips in swathes of complementary colours or plant them in blocks of single colour around the place. It's in an 18 foot long border with a fair amount of perennials in that stand over the winters, some evergreens, some grasses - so there's a bit of structure there already.

I like colour blocks when I've seen them in gardens. Although a block of shorter tulips with a longer contrasting variety interspersed looks good as well.

I prefer a colourful mix.
but that's personal preference.

I like drifts, so somewhere between colour blocks and all mixed up.

It depends on the colours for me. I tend to do either all in one colour (so different varieties of white tulips for me), but contrasting colours also look really good. Have a look at the colour wheel examples on something like Pinterest or Google - I think it's something like opposites, or thirds or neighbour colours work well together if you're going to mix?

Colour blocks for me. They have more impact than the ones I mix up and plant.

Colour blocks.

I haven’t been successful with tulips. They don’t stand up nice and straight.

I like colour blocks although agree that it's personal preference. I can get a bit odd with colours anyway like pegs, matching underwear, you get the gist Grin

I like mixed blocks. So a block of pale pink and purple, then a block of white and dark pink and so on.

Perhaps not too regimented though, curves rather than straight lines.

I think I’ll go blocks this year. Tulips don’t reliably come back in my garden, bit damp, so I can try something different next year.
