I bought a money plant for my flat in spring this year and it’s growing nicely.. about 2-3 months ago, I noticed 3 small yellow spots which grew into tiny mushrooms. I pulled them out and thought that was the end of it.

went to spend halloween with my family and came back to these monsters!!!! However do I get rid of them?! They just look awful 😣

Snap them off and bin them... spores in the compost... not a big deal...wont harm the plant!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/10/2022 19:17

OMG, I love them.

So, so cute!!

I want indoor mushrooms.

septembersapphire7 · 31/10/2022 19:18

How do I stop them coming back? I want them to go away 😔

They're adorable and very Halloween-y

TheSpottedZebra · 31/10/2022 19:29

Keep the compost dryer and water from the bottom should help prevent them recurring.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/10/2022 19:34

How do I get some?

I really want some.

purplecorkheart · 31/10/2022 19:36

Water from the bottom and maybe put a layer of something like canvas on the soil.

Thanks for the reply everyone.. can you tell I don’t do well with plants 😬 going to snap these off and buy something to cover the top tomorrow. Honestly managed to scare me when I got back from work today.. popped up in 3 days!

google tells me I must have over watered so will let the soil dry out. Does water from the bottom mean let it sit in water for some time? I’ll try that for next month🤞🏽

You could empty the plant out, remove all the soil ,plant it in new soil, hope the new soil doesn’t have the fungus. The plant won’t thank you for it.

the mushrooms you see are the fruiting bodies, the actual fungus is in the soil. 90% of plant families have a symbiotic relationship with fungi, who help them access nutrients. No fungi in the world, and plants would not grow so well.

Omg I love them OP they look so charming

AnOldCynic · 01/11/2022 22:19

But that's not a money plant?

AltheaVestr1t · 01/11/2022 22:28

Amazing! They are fabulous. But possibly poisonous, so do get rid if you have kids or pets. It's not a money plant, it's a ficus.

septembersapphire7 · 01/11/2022 23:15

It was sold as pachira aquatica (money tree) so that’s what I’ve always called it.

the caps opened up today and I assume made more spores for the soil so I’m going to do what a pp said and try to repot and remove as much soil as I can.

I’m amazed people find them cute! It makes me feel so yeuch.. maybe it’s the colour or just the unexpectedness of it.. (I’m clearly not a very green fingered person at all!) thankfully no kids or pets in the house- just me and I shall not be ingesting them in any way/shape or form!

It was sold as pachira aquatica (money tree) so that’s what I’ve always called it. The usual money plant is Crassula ovata with rounder fleshy leaves.

I’m going to do what a pp said and try to repot and remove as much soil as I can Your plant would prefer you to leave it be.

If you really hate them, why not just remove them whenever they appear? If you keep the soil less wet,it may never fruit again.

Cinnamon powder over the soil is supposed to be a great fungicide for houseplants, and better for the plant than covering it.

Bottom watering doesn’t mean letting the plant stand in water forever - that will kill it. Wait until the compost is dry and dunk the pot in a basin of water until the top soil is slightly damp. Drain really well before putting it back.
