These two small border plants, only knee high if that, are in a neighbour's garden but her late husband planted them and she doesn't know its name. Does anyone know - because I'd like one for my front garden!

A bit difficult to tell without a closer view, but Nandina domesticum might fit, aka ‘Heavenly bamboo’. There are a few varieties, but they are known for their fiery foliage.

PinkPencilCase · 22/08/2022 21:47

I was going to say Nandina too.

Herbert the Hebe..

Is it deciduous ? Does she cut it back each spring into that little ball shape? If so, it might be Sorbaria semifolia Sem.

MereDintofPandiculation · 23/08/2022 08:39

Nandina has been very prominent in garden centres in the last few years.

PrincessGraceless · 23/08/2022 09:01

Yes it’s a Nandina (like someone else said - most likely heavenly bamboo)

IcakethereforeIam · 23/08/2022 16:53

OP if your neighbour agrees now would be the time to propagate it from a cutting for your own garden.

Nandina or spirea (autumn gold). Hard to tell without a closer photo of the leaf.

AngelicaBluebellCosmos · 24/08/2022 23:33

Hmmm. The plants appear to have serrated leaves which ruled out Nandina for me (I have a Nandina domestica in my garden).
Spirea does have serrated leaves which would rule it in…

Pluckyduck · 24/08/2022 23:41

Is it Pieris?

Here is a close-up of the plant in question....

And another close-up of a very similar one, actually I think this is the one I originally posted... to avoid, I don't know, allegations of 'plantlighting'.... 🙂
