Has anyone grown a Scadoxus multiflorus (blood lily)?

I bought 5 Scadoxus multiflorus bulbs from J Parkers and planted them in pots in the spring. I have them in various places around the house but not one has sprouted.

Has anyone had any success with them and/or any suggestions what I am doing wrong?

I've never even heard of them, it looks amazing. You must be so disappointed. What have Parkers said? Have you unearthed any of the bulbs to see if they've rotted?

RadiatorValve · 30/07/2022 11:52

I didn’t think to unearth the bulbs as they look fine from the top (planted half above the compost) but I’ve now examined them all. One was rotten underneath, three look fine but no roots. And one has two fairly substantial roots, so that’s exciting. Thank you for suggesting this.

I haven’t contacted Parker’s. Also a good suggestion and will do.

Best of luck. I had a read and there only seems to be fairly generic information about them. I'm glad at least one seems to be a goer, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

An exciting update @IcakethereforeIam

The bulb with the roots has burst into growth and looks like it will flower soon. A second bulb has a small shoot.

Perhaps I was just not been by patient enough.

Thank you for the update, I feel like a proud auntie.

Pinkywoo · 07/08/2022 15:53

Ooh that's exciting, are they related to amaryllis?

RadiatorValve · 07/08/2022 16:07

@IcakethereforeIam 😀

Yes, they are in the Amaryllidaceae family, in the same subfamily as amaryllis.

I will post a picture when the bloom opens.

Worth the wait?

RadiatorValve · 11/08/2022 22:48

Thank you 🍷

Yes, definitely worth the wait. It’s quite glowing in person. Fireball lily is one of its names, I can see why.

Just come back to look at it again Wink

Still looking fabulous. The structure of the flower is amazing, I can’t really get it to show in a photo but there is a sphere within the sphere where the petals meet and it’s quite lovely.
