Foxgloves

Advice gratefully received.

If I start germinating foxgloves now when would I plant out for next summer?

When would I sow poppy seeds for next year? And those get down out directly don't they?

That should read

Foxgloves:

I germinate mine in a seed tray and then prick out into small individual pots. Depending on how big they grow they can be planted out late summer (September time) if they are robust or kept in a cold frame and plnated out arly next spring.

I've never grown poppies so am not sure Smile

Poppies need light to germinated so need scattering on bare soil. Probably easier to sow in spring rathe than try to keep the soil bare all winter

@MereDintofPandiculation

Would now be the wrong time to sow?

I just scatter poppy seed as this years poppies finish, or when I can be bothered. Foxgloves get more attention, as above, but seeds and seedlings are teeny tiny.

sunglassesonthetable · 26/07/2022 09:31

Do you do anything further @LadyGardenersQuestionTime eg Thin out?
Could I don't some now?

I just cut the stems, about now, and scatter the seeds directly on the soil. Most germinate for next year, and then I go round and dig up the stronger ones, and plant where I want. In other areas, they have gone their own way, and are actually better at spacing themselves than I am! If you are not bothered where they come up, just let them get one with it. I started with three, I now regularly have 50 or so a year.

That's foxgloves, poppies I don't have.

That sounds lovely @BigWoollyJumpers
