What kind of tree would be happy in this pot?

I bought a very large pot and I'd like to plant a tree in it.

I'm stumped as to what to plant though. It needs to be happy in there for a few years and not grow too big! Just a happy little corner of shade.

How big is it?

sibleys patio quince terracefruits.com/products/sibley-patio-quince
love the blossom and the smell of the fruit

Cornus kousa China Girl

pretty flowers and (non edible) red fruit

can’t really tell how big the pot is but these are two smallish trees I love

I've got a Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy in a largish pot. It is deciduous but worth the bare winter branches for the beautiful dark red heart-shaped leaves, pink blossom in spring and gorgeous autumn colours. Very easy to care for too.

I have a dwarf cherry, Kojo no mai, in a large pot. It's been there over 20 years. I love it because it's different at every season - spring flowers, then bright green leaves, red leaves in autumn and twiggy in winter.

Looks a bit small for a tree, unless maybe a small olive tree?

TheBeesKnee · 07/07/2022 21:20

Sorry, it's about knee height! I am 5'5"

I would put an Acer in it, they do well in pots

spanishsummers · 07/07/2022 22:35

A dwarf fruit tree. There are lots.

Definitely Acer. There are lots with different coloured leaves

bilbodog · 07/07/2022 22:49

Olive would work well - i have two.

Beebumble2 · 08/07/2022 12:01

I have Pieris, Kinkgo Biloba ( it grows slowly), Olives, and dwarf cherry. They ate all happy in pots. Acers need ericaceous compost.
Most small ornamental trees will grow happily in pots as long as the compost is the right type and they are frequently watered.

Billybagpuss · 08/07/2022 12:16

Oh I love that, I would go Acer, slow growing won’t need much attention.

livelyoasis · 08/07/2022 12:27

Acer would be good but an olive would look great in that pot.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/07/2022 14:12

Yes, acers are nice, and more upright than my previous suggestion of Kojo no mai.

Billybagpuss · 08/07/2022 14:39

I do love my acers

You could put a fig tree in it - they are often kept in small pots as they need root restriction. I guess this pot is about the size of a bucket ? (So about 15 litres)?
