Fox attack!

My beautiful just about flower delphinium in tub has been murdered over night by a fix digging. The lupin and hollyhock alongside it are on the critical list. Aside from shooting it what can I do?

I don't have a gun though I know a man who does....

Tbh we thought the garden was fix proof but we saw one last week who left by leaping a five foot fence!

You could put Holly trimmings down on the soil to make digging less pleasant for the foxes?

Northernlurker · 05/05/2022 08:41

It's a tub that's been attacked currently. But yes I thought about prongs.....

Bloody squirrels dig up everything I plant so I have taken to covering things with chicken wire until they are established but that might be a bit extreme for you.

If this a tub you might get away with a covering of decorative cobbly rocks/stones on the soil?

We've got Asbo squirrels. Used to use plastic forks but we never get them any more so use cut down canes which aren't as effective but don't look as unsightly as a thousand white takeaway forks.

Asbo squirrels made me laugh, I think we have their relatives!

Thats awful northernlurker, is it completely beyond saving?

The delphinium was broken off :( I thought about trying a replant but couldn't bear to look at it dying. The hollyhock seemed to have done the best. I'm going to replant it and use stones!

I liberally sprinkle extra hot chilli powder on stuff to stop the squirrels naffing with it.
Might work against foxes?

Male urine apparently deters them too, but maybe not directly on the plants...

The Delphinium is likely to grow again from the base- Unless it was very tiny.
Foxes do dig in gardens, and containers, but plants are quite resilient to animal damage.
Nothing I know keeps foxes away - Even if they are killed, new foxes 🦊 will move onto the “ Empty” territory.
Annoying that they dig, but that’s foxes.
