Millboard decking issues

I've just had Millboard decking installed by an approved installer. They finished yesterday. I think it took them longer than they thought, by half a day or so. They had to bring in an extra person for the final half day. I feel like they wanted it over and rushed it.

I'm not happy with the finish. My DH says move on and just accept it. He likes an easy life. However, having just parted with a little over £11k I'm less inclined to.

Once I got into the garden yesterday and had a good look I spotted the issues. I have informed the company and they are coming round on Tuesday morning to chat about it.

I just wanted a second opinion in case I'm being overly fussy.

The issues are:

  1. They haven't painted the cut ends with the Millboard coloured paint so the cut edges are grey and I imagine might peel over time?
  1. They have obviously fixed boards and then taken them up and reinstalled in a different place but they haven't fixed/neatened the original screw holes so it looks unsightly.
  1. The deck goes up and down a bit and isn't levelled properly.
  1. The have tried to fit to the the natural undulations of the wall and it looks ridiculous. Why they didn't put a picture board edge I have no idea. Our last deck had a picture board edge and it looked great. If they weren't going to put an edge then surely they should pick a line and follow it?
  1. One board is loose and bangs when you walk on it.

Will add some photos. I would appreciate any thoughts. Am I being fussy? Shoukd I just accept it?

No, I wouldn't accept that. Did they provide any layout drawings before completing the work?

They should have at least asked what you wanted along the existing wall - picture board edging/planks ending in a straight line/or follow wall like they have done (badly)

And the screw holes etc, pretty poor.

Also the gaps don't look regular, I thought Millboard was a system with regular gaps a certainty.

Thanks. My DH makes me feel like I'm some kind of lunatic perfectionist!

They didn't provide layout drawings of the layout. Didn't realise that was even a thing to expect. I'm so utterly disappointed and deflated. What a waste of money.

I only paid half up front so still owe half.

The decking firm came back today and have gone away to put a plan together, they will get back to me tomorrow....

@CatherineCawood Hope you get it sorted. Did they admit it was a poor job?

BackflandedCondiment · 04/05/2022 13:45

Hope you get it sorted out, OP. That is a shockingly poor job that I'd be a bit disappointed with if I'd done it myself, let alone paid £11k for it.

CatherineCawood · 05/05/2022 21:18

I said to my DH if we had done it ourselves then fair enough but we didn't.

They came back today and we have a plan so hoefully in 24 hours it will be sorted.

I realise this was sometime ago but what was the resolution to such a poor installation, did Millboard themselves step in as it was a recommended installer?

Notreallyawaitress · 30/03/2025 20:22

I’d be interested in this too as we’re having Millboard fitted next week

CatherineCawood · 16/04/2025 21:12

Hi, it kind of got sorted. They re-edged the wobbly edges and got rid of the scuffed bits. Replaced one board and screwed down the loose one. It isn't level though and water sits on certain bits which has made it green. Overall I'm happy with it, however now selling the house due to divorce 🙃
