2008 - what veg are you planning to grow?

apples

asparagus, blackcurrants, raspberries, butternut squash, strawberries, apples, pears, butternut squash, purple sprouting, French beans, mangetout, cucumber, courgettes, tomatoes. Some cut and come again salads in troughs too.

Hope this year's weather's better than last, our tomatoes were ruined by blight and slugs got all our salads.

I am allotment virgin...the books are by my bed, the plot is half dug and so I need to plant..

Have just ordered the bits to make two 4mx1m raised beds in our front garden. We shared a friend's allotment last year and got bitten by the veg-growing bug, but would rather have them at home. Front garden is wasted space and quite well screened from the road so we're hoping it's not going to look too wierd!

Our wish list so far is:

runner beans
peas
parsnips
salad potatoes
lettuce
radishes
Jerusalem artichokes
one marrow plant (not as many as we grew last year ...!)
one courgette plant
strawberries and flowers (in DD1's little patch)
rhubarb (want to get some started anyway, may not grow this year?)

Any observations on how sensible that lot looks are most welcome!

Hadn't thought of butternut squash. Are they hard to grow?

Butternut squash are easy to grow - they just need a lot of room. I have 9ft x 3ft plots and grow 4 butternut squash plants on one plot and nothing else. My best year I got 30+ fruits grow to a decent size. They store well.

Thanks Stripey ... DH is keen to grow a big pumpkin (as well as the marrow ) so we might have to wait till next year. But will def. put them on the wishlist for 2009!

We managed all these on our slightly smaller than half plot last year but we had peas and runner beans as well. No-one bothered to eat the beans and the peas weren't worth it for all the space they took up so we aren't going to bother again. I would like to have a bit more space for a couple of extra rows of potatoes but there's only so much we can cram in! My parsnips were a disaster because my mum insists on covering everything in horse manure and they forked so I don't know whether to have another go this year or not.

Notice that loads of you are doing butternut squash. Tried it once but it was abject failure. Do you think it will work as far north as Edinburgh?

Snorkle - how did you manage that lot. We had the crappiest weather and had an odd tiny sprouting of whatever we put in. Sod all grew. We were so disappointed.

Oh apart from excellent cherry tomatoes.

KEJ: my butternut squashes were a bit of a failure last year too. It's the first time I've tried them & I got two teeny squashes from two plants. I'm hoping for better things this year. The corgettes were similar - maybe a half dozen from 2 plants and they're supposed to be easy. Is this answering your question sdam? I have 5 beds approx 2m x 1m each; one for beans; one for carrots and onions; one for salad stuff; one for butternut squash and one for rhubarb and cabbage/cauli. (The corgettes were sneaked in a flower bed and the apples were off the tree). So I didn't grow huge amounts of anything. The beans, onions and salad did best. This year I'll rotate the crops and (hopefully) add 2 more beds.

No Tatoes this year as they all got blight last year . This year I have gone for what we use in the kitchen most and what is expensive to buy in the markets / shops.

Going to be challenge again this year with DC3 due in May. DC1 & 2 were born end April so I'm used to working around things. Can't wait to get started but the poor weather is holding things up

btw - the spicy mix leaf salad is fantastic. HAve grown it for the last 3 years. It's a cut and come again and you can cut it 3-4 times easily. Comes up in 6-8 weeks and is fantastic would recommend it to anyone - really worth growing and it doesn;t need much space. I grew it in growbags the first year I tried it. We have a load of beer left over from a garden party last year which I sneaked into my potting shed before DH found it - slugs will all be merry on our plot this year (for a short time .

I have been trying to find out how you grow spuds in an upright tunnel. If I find out I might do that too.

We spent most of last year double-digging our brand new vegetable patch - it took that long as I was pg and couldn't wield a spade very well

We grew raspberries and courgettes last year with great success. Out tomatoes got blight though, and the birds ate all our blueberries!

I am a bit rubbish at this sort of thing and only have pots on a patio anyway - but last year I managed to grow to eating standard some lettuces (rather too many lettuces, most of which bolted but I do have lots of seeds from them) and about 3 courgettes. This year I'm hoping that the strawberry plants, which I bought in late summer and which went ballistic with leaves but didn't fruit, will survive the winter and do something eatable, will sow the lettuce seeds and also have a pack of broccoli seeds to try.

I dont know , but it's apparently highly regarded on the continent and is referred to as the vegetable oyster because of its taste. It was cheap, so, I thought worth a try

My garlic cloves came today for planting out. I also got some asparagus seeds and cannellini bean seeds. I cant help myself

Can I recommend ebay for bulk buying seeds btw? I bought a batch of 30 packets of seeds for £9.99. Well worth it. All within date and mostly Suttons I think.

says its a good companion plant to repel carrot fly too... i may get that too. top tip, thanks
