Confused Assumed it should be brown. Planted it last year. Dead seed heads are on green stems.

Watching with interest!

It will start shooting in the leaf joints, I cut mine back to about 12” and wait. Sprinkle the seed heads around and you’ll get plenty more!

I cut my down in the autumn, I know they say spring but I don't want seed heads left and I am lazy so I literally just chop it. If you leave the seeds heads your garden will be overrun with baby verbena bonaris, I spent more times pulling these up last year than weeds.

Hopefully someone with better gardening techniques/knowledge will come along in a minute!

Sympathy with @Noisyprat but I tend to leave the seed heads for birds and wildlife.I agree that pulling up wayward seedlings can be a bit of a full time job though!

Yantan do you prune even if green?

I just chop most of it back to the floor and then to be a bit prudent leave some at the lowest new growth.

You can prune it, or not.

If you don't, be prepared for a gazillion more. If you do, just prune it to above a joint. It will be fine. I prune green and brown right back to the base because I don't want a gazillion seedlings, and I like to prune fast so one chop is better than 12.

I chop mine right to the ground as I find it gives me stronger taller plants the following season.
