Read that winter autumn good but not when ground frozen or waterlogged. So not winter then!

I would leave it now until late March! September would have been okay, maybe October at a push, but not January!

Is that why they’re currently reduced ?

If you have a greenhouse I would pot it up in a large pot, then let it grow a bit before planting up in the Spring. Mine put on a lot of growth when I did the same.
