I want to be able to care for it better. I’m not sure if it’s thriving or shrivelling!

Can anyone tell me what this plant is?

It looks like a tradescantia, if you cut the ends off about five leaves back, you can pop the ends in the soil and they'll grow new plants. And the old stems should regrow from the side of the cut end.

Looks like a Tradescantia.

A rather sad Tradescantia

Wow thank you, that was quick!
@minniemoll, sorry to be dim but what do you mean by ‘5 leaves back’? Do you mean I should cut on the leggy stem?

search online for spider plant cuttings or propagaing spider plants

It's a tradescantia and they do get a bit leggy like that. As a pp has said you can cut off a few shoots with (say) 5 sets of leaves, then take off the bottom few sets of leaves, and put the bottom of the stalks (without leaves) into water. They root more easily into water then than in soil (in my experience) - then when a good few roots are showing you can pot into soil.

They aren't spider plants.

I didn't say they were.
