Instant hedges

Does anyone have any advice about instant hedges? Or some instant privacy plants that grow fast, upto 5ft? For front garden.

Troughs of bamboo. Do NOT plant them in the ground!

Really? Will I have to trim them? Or can you get bamboo that doesn’t grow further than a specific height? How deep do the troughs have to be?

There are many different varieties of bamboo, few of which reach more than about 2.5m. But 'instant' big ones will cost a fortune, and you have to plant them in large tubs or troughs, and stand the tubs on a hard surface like slabs so the roots can't find their way out of the bottom and into the ground. Some of them are very invasive.

Some ordinary hedging will grow fast, but it won't nicely stop growing at the height you want, it will keep right on shooting for the sky.

Bamboo will escape!!! We've spent the whole summer removing a grove 5 metres by 5 metres that escaped from a pot... it's a nightmare. There were runners coming up on the other side of the lawn 10 metres away. When I see bamboo in the garden centres it makes me shudder!!
