What to grow up my house…in a pot

Our house is south facing and sheltered but (tiny) front garden is all paved. I’d love a wisteria but don’t think it would survive in a container would it? Evergreen jasmine seems like a better bet but if anyone has any other suggestions they’d be very welcome!

Passionflower?

Rose(s) or a rose and clematis combo?

Tashface · 25/08/2021 13:13

Another vote for star jasmine - or you could go down the rabbit hole that is 'I'm just going to buy the one clematis' but then get totally addicted like me and buy eight more in the same year Blush

I have honeysuckle in a big pot (and another in the ground), it takes a long time to really get going though and unsure if south facing might mean it’s too hot.
They like their bottoms shaded by other plants and their tops in the sun.

It would have to be a very big pot. Can you lever up a paving stone or 2?

Or build a raised bed.

Unfortunately not - the front of the house is underpinned so there’s 2m of cement below the paving up against the house. Not much room to build a raised bed and would that be any better than a massive pot? I’ve attached a pic of a random house which looks pretty much exactly like mine and has something growing where I’d like to do similar.

I have a clematis Montana Ruben and a honeysuckle both in pots and thriving, both were planted in March at about a foot tall. The clematis has got so big I think I'll need to change its pot soon!

Our neighbours have a wisteria growing in a barrel. It covers two sides of their house from basement to first floor, the railings and their neighbours front facade. It's been that size (with pruning) since I've lived here (nearly 20 years).

There are a lot of climbing roses that do well in containers and they love full sun.

Those are lovely @kerkyra! I should definitely grow something else up the other side.

That’s amazing @chesirecat99!

I grow grape vines on my south facing balcony, lots of very small but very sweet black grapes in September.

I have a wisteria growing in a (very big!) pot. You need to look for dwarf, or American, wisteria, which is a lot less vigorous than the normal Chinese wisteria that scales roofs! American varieties get to about 10 foot at most, so can go in a pot.
