Why are slugs coming to my patio to die?

Ok only two. But they’ve done the same thing. I notice a slug in the middle of the patio and it’s sticking it’s head right up. Odd thing for a slug to do. I look a couple of hours later and it’s dead.
A couple of weeks apart.

Any ideas?

I don’t like removing dead slugs from the patio.

Hmmm. Is there weed killer on the patio? Might they be going from A to B via patio and perishing en route due to that?

FortunesFave · 29/07/2021 22:12

They're not coming there to die...they're likely being killed by slug pellets in a neighbour's garden and just dying on their way elsewhere.

No weed killer in my garden, none in neighbour’s judging by their weeds.

They’re near a trough that has honeysuckle and big daisy type plant, but I can’t think what else they’ve both passed by.

Maybe the other neighbour has slug pellets, they’ve got some new pots. I’ll ask then

The feel a deep ennui combined with an unextinguishable existential angst about the state of the world and they wish to end it all. Alas, it will continue without them...

My patio must be particularly depressing then

They're dead. What's to worry about?

MakkaPakkas · 29/07/2021 22:31

Perhaps it's a particularly spiritual place for them?

thesplashing · 29/07/2021 22:31

Slug pilgrimage.

They come to patio and kitchen step to die too but not in the same as yours, mine die cos I kill them. I know I probably shouldn't and that I'm messing with some kind of food chain but we had a big bastard that would come out at night and leave trails on my living room carpet. Not kidding, at least three years I knew it was under the stairs in the cupboard and then one night I caught the bastard right in the middle of my living room watching Doctor Who with me like it owned the place.

I've also stood on one BAREFOOT on my kitchen floor twice. I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than repeat that again. So they may not know it, but they come to my patio to die too.

Bleurrrr

I once lived in a student house that had slugs in the kitchen and bathroom (bathroom off the kitchen). Go to the toilet at night without your slippers on at your peril!

You’ve heard of the elephants graveyard? You’ve obviously inadvertently built your patio over the slugs graveyard.

I am an expert at removing slugs (it was my responsibility as a kid as we used to get loads).

  1. Coffee / tea grounds or something else with a similarly rough texture on the grass / around plants on the edge of the patio near the grass will help as slugs hate it on their tummies.
  1. If you don’t mind killing them then a salt border around the patio will work 100% of the time as it makes them explode.
  1. Slugs are attracted to rotting material. So have a good look around your garden to see what they might be going too.

Ha ha yes that was my exact thought earlier today! Wonder if it’s why previous owners left… it’s not a question on the Property Information Form…
