How do you store cacti potting mix (or any other soil) after you've opened it?

Just that (very) basic question really. The bags they sell are quite large and I will probably be using a small quantity and need to keep the rest.

Do I store it in an airtight container (to prevent contamination, bugs, etc)? And for how long?

Thanks!

Just close it with an elastic band or a bag clip and put it in an out-of-the-way corner of the garden or in a shed or outhouse. The stuff lasts quite a while - 2-3 years or so; if you keep it indoors not so long as it dries out and is hard to damp down again. If you end up not using it, you can sprinkle it over the flower beds in the garden. A lot of places sell fairly small bags of compost for cacti and other specialist mixes. Homebase springs to mind.

Incidentally, cactus compost is the same as normal compost, but with added sand, grit or lava rock for free drainage. So you could mix your own small quantity if you have the basic ingredients.

With a clip, either under the sink in the utility or in my shed.
