Is it too late to sow sweetcorn and courgette ? In the south east..

After a miserable stint at gardening this year I find myself with many dead plants..

Is it too late to sow some sweetcorn this week? Or am I risking raw corns? And what about courgettes? After having 4 plants die you'd think I'd throw in the towel but I really would like to grow a courgette this year..

I'm reading conflicting things on the internet so know not what to believe

Well, I'm going to start a few courgette plants this weekend, in a position that is very very sunny. My packet says I can still plant so... who knows?

I think it depends how long our summer lasts. We might get a bit of a crop of we get good dry warmth into September. Most years my courgettes go on and on and on.

I've never had any success with sweetcorn so can't advise.

Start the courgettes in toilet roll tubes filled with soil on a sunny windowsill to give them a head start and ensure that no beasties get to the seedling. Once the second set of leaves have established, get them outside!

Can't comment on sweetcorn either, but I know from my allotment days you'd have to plant a good bunch of them to allow them to cross-pollinate, so you'd need a large-ish patch in the garden to facilitate this. Even then you might not get enough to pollinate so if you want quick and satisfying, and in my experience, bountiful, courgettes or pumpkins are a good safe bet!

Courgette go for it

Sweetcorn probably on the late side and you need a lot of them to make it worthwhile.

Sweet corn need to be planted in a block, not a row, to ensure wind pollination, so make sure if you do grow them you can plant them grid style.

I'm just flung some courgette seeds in today so fingers crossed!

I thought I'd have loads of time to garden on maternity leave 😂

I don't have much space so sweetcorn are a no go. I've got two more courgette seeds I'm eagerly awaiting on and praying they grow and give fruit. And one dodgy looking thing from bnq which just about has two of its true leaves forming
