#nomowmay - what's popped up in your lawn?

I've been letting the lawn go unmown for May and there's been some really unusual flowers which have come through. DH is desperate to mow it again but I think I'll keep a section to grow! I will add some pictures in the next post.

Nothing that I can see except grass!

Ours is covered in speedwell but we usually get that to a certain extent, it's very pretty. Lots of bare dandelion heads. A few daisies. We are going to let the shady area under the trees stay uncut.

Dandelions and clover. We always leave a big patch of clover anyway as the rabbit loves it.

I caved and mowed

Was worried my lawnmower wouldn’t cope if it got much longer

I found a pound coin and killed the dogs tennis ball.

😂 I think as the lawn had been left to go pretty wild for a few years as it was a probate house we just bought, there were lots of weeds wildflowers anyway! I really like the germander speedwell, the blue is beautiful and it doesn't have the ugly leaves that a lot of wildflowers have.

Field mice! The cat killed one though.

it doesn't have the ugly leaves that a lot of wildflowers have. Oh, that's such a sad comment! Many wildflowers have lovely leaves - look at funlitory, Thalictrum, Aquilegia, cotton thistle, yarrow, mullein. And ugly or boring leaves are abundant among garden plants.

DH was worried the lawnmower wouldn’t cope if he left it too much longer so he mowed a few days ago. He was right. The lawnmower didn’t cope. He has a ride-on anyway but apparently we now need a bigger one.

We do have a lot of grass. I won’t say lawn because it’s not. House was built in a sheep paddock two years ago. So we have lots of weeds. Lots of thistles. Lots of dandelions.

DH is obsessed with cutting it all but we are planning a lot of wild areas to be left.
