Please tell me about your Harlow Carr rose

I’ve just ordered one. My first rose! If you have one, how’s it getting on? Does it manage okay even if there isn’t loads of sunshine? (We’re in Scotland)

I’m pretty confident about planting but need to read up on ongoing rose care and especially on pruning.

Feel slightly nervous, as if waiting for an exciting but challenging visitor to arrive

How exciting!
I have two Harlow Carr next to each other. They are a lovely soft pink and quite a delicate rose.

Roses definitely need the sunniest spot you have, but I wouldn't worry about the weather not giving enough sunshine.

I think the most important thing is to never plant under a tree or too close to a hedge like I did

I give mine a gentle tidy up in November and prune in late February (before the new growth begins) .
I've fed mine a few times with tomato food. They are looking quite promising, have grown tall but rosebuds are only just about appearing now.
They will need a lot of water. (Probably not an issue in rainy Scotland)?

The David Austin website has lots of information and advice on care

Good luck! Smile

Thanks! Have you had your two for long? Do they flower pretty abundantly?

Mine’s going into a sheltered west-facing spot with some southern exposure (neighbour’s shed in the way blocks a bit of its sun). The soil seems good there and weeds other things grow abundantly. The other option would be east-facing with arguably just a touch more sun but a lot more exposure to wind and, I think, slightly drier soil...I don’t know, instinctively position A feels better.

Dispatch email appeared late last night. I’ll be half looking out for a driver even though the delivery date is really meant to be tomorrow 👀
