String trimmer damage- replace?

I stupidly damaged my young crab apple with a string trimmer. Sad
Thinking of just replacing it as it will probably die, or should I give it a chance? How long would it take for it to die?

It might not die at all. Plenty of trees survive with a bit of damage, give it a chance. It would only definitely die if the bark was damaged all the way round, as in ring barking, have hope 🤞

Thanks @OhTheIronyOfItAll suppose I could wait and see before I dig the poor thing up. So annoyed with myself for damaging it.

Please buy a guard, if not for this tree the next one.
I would pop into a nursery you should probably treat that to prevent disease setting in.
Crabapples are pretty hardy. I expect it will survive with some TLC.

Thanks @fallfallfall will definitely buy a guard if the tree survives, or for its successor. Going to get some mulch as well to slow down my all too eager trimming habits!
