Will sunflowers grow in an East facing garden?

All the research seems to say a "sunny spot" but this garden is East facing. Plus it is a 3 ft hedge behind where it would grow

Yes, just a bit slower, so they're shorter when they flower.

The whole garden faces east, but presumably you have a south, north and west facing boundary within it? How many hours of sun will they get in your proposed position? I have successfully grown sunflowers in my north east facing front garden, which is quite open and where they were positioned they got a good 5-6 hours of sunshine in the morning. I guess they'll do better, the more hours of sunshine you can give them.

every time I plant sunflowers they get eaten by slugs. or maybe squirrels. every single time.

Yes we had some lovely sunflowers last year in our east facing garden. They were on the North side against the fence so did get sun.

So the garden is east with a North side so not the best side but can only try
