Has anyone grown star jasmine and climbing roses together?

Did/does it look good?

Was it successful or did the jasmine take over?

Never grown jasmine as I hate the smell but I imagine regularly checking and pruning would keep in bounds?

Poppins2016 · 16/05/2021 15:47

That's what I'm hoping (re pruning)!

I really want something evergreen and a rose... suppose I'll just have to trial it?!

Ive grown climbing roses with pyracantha, ceanothus and a monstous clematis montana before, Im not sure how vigorous a star jasmine is, but paired with the right rose I think would be fine, and look lovely!

Poppins2016 · 16/05/2021 16:02

Thanks @Stickytreacle this is giving me hope! I've actually bought two star jasmine and two climbing roses (mortimer sackler) so that I can plant one each on either side of a wooden arch, but I've got cold feet just before biting the bullet and planting!

I have star jasmine and fine it is very restrained - if anything I'd expect the rose to dominate. Sounds lovely if it works though!

Poppins2016 · 16/05/2021 20:22

Excellent, thanks @BewareTheBeardedDragon! I think I'll get planting tomorrow Smile

I’ve just googled Mortimer Sackler rose, I think they will look beautiful together.

Yes, I grow 2 varieties of star jasmine with a lovely climbing rose called Maygold. They are much slower growing than regular jasmine & are easily pruned if getting too fluffy.

Just placemarking. I love star jasmine and that combo looks lovely alkanet.

Poppins2016 · 20/05/2021 10:10

@alkanet that combination looks beautiful together, thanks for attaching the picture!
I didn't realise they're slow growing, good thing I bit the bullet and bought reasonably large plants for impact, so I have plenty of long stems to tie in. Smile

I planted the star jasmine with my roses earlier this week, I guess the proof will be in the pudding this summer!

That's fab @alkanet - love May gold!

alkanet · 21/05/2021 01:39

Thanks Beware, Barking & Poppins

I went a bit loopy with the varieties of star jasmine when I found out how easy they were to grow. Have you seen the one called summer sunset with yellow and red leaves? It takes ages to get going but lovely in winter when the world is a bit dull.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 21/05/2021 07:26

Ooh, that sounds fab.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2021 07:48

That looks lovely. I'm sorely tempted but the descriptions imply it may not be 100% hardy so it might be risky in Lancashire... I don't think I've seen any around here.

BarkingUpTheWrongRoseBush · 21/05/2021 08:54

@ErrolTheDragon. I’m in the north west and it’s doing ok so far in a sheltered bit of the garden. We rarely get frosts, we are by the sea, but did this year and it can through ok.

alkanet · 21/05/2021 11:20

Mine made it through snow a couple of years back. I'm in Colchester which can get cold winds but not much rain. I think it would suffer if the roots were sodden & cold. It is surprising what some of these exotic plants can take though (once they've got a good root system down.)

@alkanet may I please know if it worked as I want to do the same to cover a brick wall?

Poppins2016 · 26/03/2023 20:59

@Gilmoregirly my jasmine and roses have survived the recent harsh winter unscathed and the combination is lovely, so I'd say my experiment worked. I'm curious to see how/whether @alkanet responds!

@Poppins2016 thank you so much for your reply. Fantastic news, I have an outbuilding with a brick wall that I would like to cover. I already have a mature rose and a star Jasmine on large pots. I will use these.

I know this thread is a million years old, but any chance of some pics of your jasmine and rose combo? I'm looking to do the same!
