Would you trust it? I don't want to plant out my seedlings only to have them frosted.

My DH keeps telling me the same. I’ve planted some Cosmos and Nemesia out and will do more at the end of the week.

I am 'hardening' some of my tender plants (still in pots) and moving them back in to the shed every night at the moment (no greenhouse). Only for them to get clobbered by a massive hailstorm today Angry. I'd probably agree with the 'no frost' prognosis here in the east of England. But this very much depends on where you are. I also follow the rule of the 'Ice Saints': www.theguardian.com/news/2013/may/10/weatherwatch-cold-may-ice-saints after a few repeated disasters with frosts in May over the years I never plant anything tender out before mid-May now, so I'm all set for planting this weekend.

I have planted out my geraniums! Earlier than I would in a normal year, but as you say, the forecast is good and I am short on space. I'm in Hampshire.

Tal45 · 11/05/2021 17:09

I'm waiting till the end of the month - got caught out this time last year :-D

WellTidy · 11/05/2021 17:16

My bedding plants have gone into pots today. Fingers crossed! But I haven’t planted out my runner beans or peas plants. They’re still indoors.

Janedownourlane · 11/05/2021 20:58

Also feeling a bit nervous here-North East, although the 10 day forecast looks ok for nights. I planted out my sweet peas a couple of weeks ago and they look ok so far, not much growth, but still alive and green!
I have beans just starting indoors but I'm putting out cosmos in the day and back into the shed overnight. They coped ok with the heavy rain and just managed to avoid the hail...what a May!
I potted up some geraniums into a pot for the front of the house but they will now go in and out until the end of the month.
Interesting article on the Ice Saints GlowWine

I've been popping my tomatoes in and out each night.... havnt put my cosmos out yet but I might tomorrow no yo3uve tempted me !
A mad dash in the hail thought this evening to rescue my tomatoes from the hail !Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 12/05/2021 08:03

I've got cosmos in the cold frame, with the lid propped open and the sweet peas which were in there are out though I've only planted a few so far. I guess if I can get the cosmos planted I can put the tomatoes in the cold frame. There's some broad beans in there too but they've only just germinated (I've not grown those before).

I've left my baby plants out for the last two nights, I was getting them in and out but they were soaking Monday night and the forecast wasn't particularly cold, and last night I plain forgot. They look ok. I might leave them out now unless the forecast looks particularly cold! They have taken a battering in the rain the last few days though!

MilduraS · 12/05/2021 08:08

I planted my cosmos last weekend. They grew so quickly I can direct sow if they fail. I'm a bit more nervous about my dahlias but they'll probably go out this weekend as they're getting too big.

Purplewithred · 12/05/2021 08:13

My courgettes and squash went out at the weekend like it or not. Fingers crossed they wil be OK but I need my greenhouse back.

Finfintytint · 12/05/2021 08:14

I’m waiting a tad longer ( Scotland).

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/05/2021 08:22

My dahlias are about 18 inches tall, so I will need to be cautious about putting them out. On the other hand, I need them out so I can get my tomatoes into their final pots. Then I can plant out the seedlings in the propagator and sow some more seeds. Logistics is by far the worst of my problems at this time of year.

toomuchfaster · 12/05/2021 08:27

Dorset here. I put out courgettes and pumpkin a fortnight ago, they are fine. Yesterday I put out purple sprouting and sowed carrots and radish straight in the soil. The only thing I am not putting out quite yet is the outside tomatoes, the greenhouse ones went out a fortnight ago too. Everything is looking fine, small but definitely new growth showing.

crumbsnamechange · 13/05/2021 09:36

My tomatoes are really enjoying being outside this week, after being mostly outdoors / only left outside in full sun previously (London, nighttime temps currently ~9 degrees, ~15 in the day).
